Levels of change

The ORM illustrates how each level of change…..

1. HEALTH – increase vitality and wellness
2. FITNESS – achieve weight loss, reduce body fat and improve muscle tone
3. PERFORMANCE - maximise physical potential and sport performance

….are linked to the 3 components of adaptation; Movement, Nutrition and Recovery. The ORM further illustrates that whether you want to increase vitality and wellness, achieve weight loss or maxmise performance you need to consider the volume and intensity of ALL 3 components of adaptation.

3 Components of adaptation

We are all essentially a product of our habits, the things we do day in, day out. To build habits, it is important to know What to do, How to do and Why to do.  For serious improvements in Health, Fitness and Performance it is essential to cultivate better habits in the 3 components of adaptation, they all interlink and form a continuous cycle.

1. MOVEMENT - movement/exercise can be used to place a stress on your body, this stress is required, it can be termed an ‘overload’ sometimes the overload can be very subtle, like a stretch, sometimes it may be very challenging like a heavy lift, either way overload will elicit a response which will begin the process of adaptation. Whatever your Health, Fitness or Performance Goal it is essential for you to select the most appropriate movements and exercises and apply them at the right frequency, volume and intensity to ensure the stress/overload is optimal. Overload to little and you get small returns, overload to much and you get physical and mental burnout or worse an injury!

2. NUTRITION - food and drink significantly influence how you look, feel and perform. Food and drink can either be an added stress or it can be a very powerful aid to promote a fast recovery from overload. Food and drink can also give us boundless amounts of energy. Selecting the right foods in alignment with your goals is crucial to your success

3. RECOVERY - over trained or under recovered? Once your body has been overloaded and supplied the right nutrition it needs one last component to facilitate optimum changes – recovery! Stretching, massage, compression, ice, and sleep are just some of the important variables to be considered with getting this last vital component of adaptation correct.
